SVG vs EPS vs AI vs PDF: which vector format to use
All four store artwork as scalable curves, but each has a home turf. Picking the right one avoids import errors and back-and-forth with your printer.
SVG – web and cutting machines
Open standard, tiny files, supported by browsers, Cricut, Silhouette, LightBurn and every design app. Best default when you are not sure.
EPS – signage and legacy print
The classic exchange format for sign software, embroidery digitizing and older RIPs. No transparency support, but universally accepted in the print industry.
AI – Adobe Illustrator native
Keeps layers and editability for Illustrator users. Modern AI files are PDF-compatible, so they also open in CorelDRAW, Affinity and Inkscape.
PDF – sending to a print shop
Self-contained and viewable anywhere. Ideal for proofs and final artwork delivery; most print shops prefer PDF/X.
